Despite numerous exemplary studies in management using single cases, little guidance exists on how to conduct systematic and rigorous single-case research. In this chapter, we address this void and present a roadmap for management scholars regarding the specific decisions and trade-offs they may face when conducting single-case research. Based on a systematic review of 38 single-case studies published in top management journals in the past two decades, we highlight various choices and strategies researchers must consider during single-case research regarding study design, data collection, data analysis, and presentation. We conclude with remarks and suggestions for the future application of single-case methods in management.
