Encryption algorithms play an essential role in network security. They are one type of countermeasure that can prevent unauthorized access of data. Although the security robustness of the algorithm is the focal point in choosing one, other performance metrics are also important, especially for resource-constrained technologies like unmanned aerial vehicle swarms. In the case of these vehicles, choosing a lightweight and robust algorithm is especially important. This study provides a comparison between four cryptographic algorithms, One Time Pad (OTP), AES, DES, and RSA. The simulation results show that OTP has the best performance in comparison with the other algorithms. The results also show that OTP processing time is the smallest and its RAM usage is the lowest. The biggest challenge for OTP as well as for the other algorithms is the need for a secure channel to exchange keys. In this paper, we propose Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman algorithm for exchanging keys. If the keys are securely shared between users by this algorithm and true randomness of keys is achieved, then OTP is the fastest, most secure encryption algorithm.
