The interest in underwater acoustic (UW-A) communications is keep growing in recent 30 years, because it can enable many marine applications of science, environment, commercial operations, and military. Over the years, various researches have been demonstrated for the improved system performance and robustness compared to the case of conventional underwater communication systems. In this survey, we provide an overview of physical (PHY) layer transmission technologies and medium access control (MAC) protocols for underwater acoustic communications.
