The present invention uses a substantially different tech nique for rapid reservations. This invention proposes distributed methods to setup. takedown and update lightpaths. These methods work reli ably and are robust in the presence of failures of various components in the network. The invention proposes the use of a controller associated with each routing node that is responsible for configuring the switches in that routing node. The setup, takedown and update procedures are then accom plished in a distributed manner by exchanging messages between the controllers according to specific protocols described in the embodiment. A rapid reservation procedure enables access to the resources needed to setup a lightpath efficiently and with high probability.
