简介
Using 60 women, the basis of the distinction between iconic and batonic gestures was investigated by comparing the classification of hand movements in speech and nonspeech conditions to decide whether iconicity refers to the representational value of the gestures or to their relationship with speech content. It is concluded that gesture classification and interpretation depend on verbally expressed contents to reduce intrinsic polysemy, even if the formal characteristics of gestures suffice for correct identification as iconic or batonic. It is argued that iconicity constitutes a continuous rather than a dichotomous variable.(French abstract)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
