Current network architectures are ill-suited to meet today's enterprise and academic requirements. The problem lies in the complexity needed to control and manage the network. This complexity stems from the tight relationship between both data and control plane. Therefore there is a long overdue requirement of innovations in networks. The storage, computing and applications have seen lot of innovations but the networks have remained the same. A novel network paradigm, Software Defined Networking (SDN), was proposed to alleviate this problem. SDN gives you many new ways of designing and operating networks thus enabling innovation. It provide scalable, agile networks instead of inflexible and fixed networks. According to the industry, SDN is the most important thing that has happened in last 3 decades.
