In the 1980s, working as a computer programmer on an IBM 360, I noticed a program residing on disk called Eliza. None of my fellow programmers knew what it was, so I fired it up to see what would happen. Eliza started communicating with me! I found it fascinating to have a “conversation” with Eliza but since there was no available Internet at that time, I had no way of finding out more about this program. Eliza now has a Wikipedia page 1 and there are various implementations online you can interact with, as in the following exchange:
