With the increasing usage of wireless technologies in communication and development of miniaturized smart bio medical sensors, Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) has emerged as one of the crucial research field in medical applications and computer science. Routing is the most crucial and energy consuming activity of WBAN. During routing, the packets transmission may lead to rise in temperature of sensor nodes which in turns may have hazardous effects on human body cells. To evade overheating of nodes while keeping high throughput of the networks, numerous thermal aware routing protocols are designed. This paper presents an extensive review of the various thermal aware routing protocols of WBAN. Each routing protocol has been analysed in terms of its design techniques, routing approach, application, performance and pros and cons.
