简介
In the age of rapid industrialisation, a light-weighted product having high performance characteristics is the major concern for any manufacturer, and in the current scenario, thermoplastics are serving as one of the light-weight materials in various manufacturing sectors. Over the years, thermoplastics have proven to be one of the strongest contemporaries which can not only compete solely but also can combine with other materials to form hybrid structures. Friction stir welding (FSW) is one of the major achievements in the present welding technology. FSW technology has been successfully used in joining different types of metals and is recently being utilised for thermoplastics joining. In this paper, the response of joint strength of friction stir butt welded high density polyethylene (HDPE) sheets with a traditional FSW tool by varying tool rotational speed has been investigated. Welds with uniform weld bead profile were observed. The tool rotational speed significantly influenced the weld quality in terms of strength of the joint. The failure during tensile testing was found to occur on the retreating side of the weld zone. The welds have excellent tensile properties which indicate the potential of FSW for thermoplastics in future as well.
