简介
This paper examines the impact of academic stress among students and the importance of coping strategies to keep the stress levels at healthy levels. Students are vulnerable to stress as a result of expectations to do well academically. As the expectations come from the society, family and themselves, students’ mental wellbeing could be affected as they might feel overwhelmed, anxious and depressed when they fail to meet expectations. As grit is one of the factors that could help students to not break under such pressure, it is also examined as gritty students tend to be emotionally resilient and could cope with stress and use the situation to their advantage. Hence, this paper analyzed previous studies related to students’ academic stress and significance of coping strategies in helping students to persevere when faced with challenges. The findings revealed that 1) high expectations to be academically excellent correlates with the high incidence of academic stress among students; 2) academic stress is positively linked to students’ poor mental health; 3) there is a positive correlation between effective coping strategies and decrease in academic stress and 4) there is a positive correlation between grit-enhanced coping strategies and ability to perform academically well despite stress.
