简介
Adversity experienced in early life can have enduring impacts on development, including increased risk of lifetime mental health problems. Current theoretical models propose that the type of adversity experienced in childhood can differentially impact brain development, which may explain this elevated prevalence of mental health concerns. The current study will examine whether alterations in the pace of normative neurobiological development–as measured through brain-age-gap–are dependent on the type of adversity experienced, and whether these alterations mediate the relationship between adversity exposure and mental health problems. This study draws on dimensional models of adversity, which propose unique effects of adversity characterized by threat, deprivation, unpredictability and socioeconomic stress.
