This essay argues that we can clarify where the past may help if we answer three questions: on our goals, our specific focus for comparison and on the relevant differences. Below we answer these three questions, dwelling mostly on the differences between past and present transitions. Then, we propose several research areas where drawing lessons from the past might be most fruitful.
