Retinex theory predicts perceived colour. Each of its three retinex systems determines a field of lightness that directly corresponds to surface reflectance, for the class of images called Mondrians. We describe in detail and demonstrate a complete, noise-resistant computational scheme for the retinex. A local, parallel implementation is proposed. We investigate how the scheme might provide an image segmentation based on surface materials in the real world.
