(2) Use of temporal rainfall intensity records to deduce contiguous synthetic spatial intensity distributions (a posteriori approach).

On short links (up to approximately 3 km length) success can be achieved without using spatial intensity distributions, by choosing a raingauge integration time compatible with the spatial and temporal averaging that occurs over a link of finite length (2, 7). For links longer than 3 km some knowledge of rainstorm spatial structure seems to be essential for good predictions.
