Around the world, interest in urban and metropolitan goods movements is increasing for concerns relating to the efficiency of the goods distribution and to the impacts which freight vehicles have on congestion and the environment.

Urban freight data are required for different purposes: to provide an understanding of freight operations, to monitor the effects of policy measures, and for use in urban freight models for forecasting. Data are essential in helping public and private sector decision-makers to ensure that urban freight transport is efficient and sustainable. A survey of European countries carried out within the BESTUFS research project (Browne et al., 2007) has found that the availability of freight data at urban level is far less than freight data at national level and than passenger data.
