Poor families experience low living standards. They are said to be ‘deprived’or ‘in hardship’. There is a long history of research indicating a strong relationship between low income and indicators of deprivation at any point in time. This leads to the expectation that a family’s living standards would rise and fall roughly in line with changes in its income–exiting income-poverty should mean ending hardship. The aims of this research are to promote our understanding of how people experience deprivation over time, as their incomes rise and fall.
