Although recent research suggests that leader humility is generally beneficial to follower performance, in this research we examine a situational form of leader humility, leader moral humility, and its effect on followers’ moral behavior. Utilizing social cognitive theory and a blended-method design to theoretically develop the concept of leader moral humility and its effects on followers, we propose that leader moral humility fosters the enactive mastery, vicarious experience, and verbal persuasion necessary to increase follower moral self-efficacy. In Study 1, we report the results of twenty-six qualitative interviews detailing the nature, function, and consequences of leader moral humility.
