The relationship among microbial charge, clearing procedures and animal welfare were studied in Iberian sows. The experimental development was conducted in a pig exploitation of Iberian sows of the Retinto variety. Microbial charge was estimated by sampling in four sites which were representative of three gestating/lactation systems: a pig house subjected to intensive management through farrowing crates and frame floor, a traditional pig house managed by traditional manners, and an outdoors system consisting of paddocks and camping houses. Sampling length occupied a complete period of gestation and lactation between September and December 2007, in four moments of this period: before the arrival of animals to place, after cleaning and disinfection operations were performed, after the arrival of the pigs, when starting feed supplementation of piglets, and after piglet weaning.
