Medicinal plants have been used for several centuries for prevention, treatment, and cure of diseases. The study of many of these traditional medicinal plants has led to the isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds. Some of these compounds have been chemically modified and used as drugs to mitigate ailments. Several commercially available antibiotics are derived from plants. The rise of multidrug-resistant strains of pathogens has led to an intensive search for compounds that can curb this alarming trend. The phenomenon of quorum sensing sheds a whole new light on the process of mitigation of microbial infection, where the plant-derived compounds block essential pathways (like virulence factor expression and biofilm formation) controlled by quorum sensing.
