The battery electric vehicle (BEV) charger provides an effective two-way interconnection between the grid and the vehicle in both grid to vehicle (G2V) and vehicle to grid (V2G) configurations. However, the control of power flow in either of the configurations is a challenging task. In this study, a supertwisting sliding mode-based controller (ST-SMC) is designed for the control of the bi-directional power converter in a BEV charger for tracking the desired current and output voltage of the charger in both G2V and V2G operations. The proposed controller reduces the chattering effect, which is a major drawback in power converters. The robust integral backstepping controller (IBS-SMC) is also designed in this paper for comparison purposes. The stability of the system is analyzed using the Lyapunov stability criterion.
