In a Proof of Authority (PoA) blockchain, network decentralization (arbitrary authority selection) is exchanged for efficiency and effectiveness. This implies that only a preset group of validators known as authorities can propose blocks in PoA blockchains, and they are chosen based on in-chain information such as their reputation or identity. The challenges encountered, however, on a PoA network are basically how to regulate the mining frequency, distribute, and balance the mining workload among different signers. The purpose of the work is to investigate and improve the security, performance, and trustworthiness of a PoA blockchain network by introducing the concept of a secondary miner acting as a redundant miner in the network. The scheme will challenge the purpose of a PoA network by ensuring that compromised miners are replaced with a redundant signer, hence ensuring a trustworthy network at all times.
