Antimicrobial activity of extracts and fractions of alien invasive plants; Chromolaena odorata, Tithonia diversifolia and T. rotundifolia was evaluated against six pathogenic bacterial and three fungal strains using the serial microdilution assay. Phytochemicals were determined through standard methods of analysis, while cytotoxicity tests were carried out using the colorimetric MMT assay and the Ames test. The extracts and fractions of the three plant species investigated exhibited antimicrobial activity against the tested strains with minimum inhibitory concentration ranging from 0.01 mg/ml to 2.5 mg/ml for bacterial, and 0.07 mg/ml to 2.5 mg/ml for fungal strains. All plant species tested were rich in phenolics, flavonoids and tannins, but these phytochemicals were significantly higher in C. odorata.
