This chapter covers the fundamental aspects of energy harvesting‐based wireless sensor networks (EHWSNs), ranging from the architecture of an EHWSN node and of its energy subsystem, to protocols for task allocation, medium access control (MAC), and routing, passing through models for predicting energy availability. The chapter explores the opportunities and challenges of EHWSNs, explaining why the design of protocol stacks for traditional WSNs has to be radically revisited. It starts by describing the architecture of an EHWSN node, and especially that of its energy subsystem. The chapter then presents the various forms of energy that are available and ways for harvesting them. Models for predicting availability of wind and solar energy are described. The chapter then presents, survey task allocation, MAC, and routing protocols proposed so far for EHWSNs.
