Physical techniques for the detection of singlet oxygen are based on monomol or dimol emission. This chapter reports on applications using an approach to determine the singlet oxygen (1O2) quenching constant by measuring steady-state monomol photoemission of singlet oxygen at 1270 nm detected by a germanium diode photodetector. Overall singlet oxygen quenching constants—the sum of the rate constants for chemical reaction and physical quenching—can be calculated from the decrease in singlet oxygen photoemission. Time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy allows determination of the effect of tested compounds on the lifetime of singlet oxygen generated photochemically by pulse irradiation of a photosensitizer.
