Preventative care and chronic disease management to reduce institutionalisation is a national priority for most western countries. This paper outlines some of the key technical challenges related to pervasive health monitoring with Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). Issues concerning the development of a common architecture with context aware sensing is discussed. In order to achieve unobtrusive pervasive sensing that links physiological/metabolic parameters and lifestyle patterns for improved well-being monitoring, and early detection of changes in disease, we demonstrate the basic structure and our experience of the UbiMon platform for continuous monitoring of patients under their natural physiological conditions.
