Worldwide, women represent about 25% less early-stage entrepreneurial activity in comparison to men (Elam et al., 2019), but how much of this activity is related to innovation? Geographical contexts may influence the recognition of innovation opportunities. Disparities in the distribution of capital and access to networks exist across territories, and these unbalances may affect female participation in innovative entrepreneurial activities (Blake and Hanson, 2005). A problem is that most research focuses on where innovation takes place as opposed to who participates in it (Alsos et al., 2016). Thus, there is a gap in the innovation literature because it pays little attention to gender issues, even though it is highly relevant to analyze gender differences, especially when, in practice, women are at a clear disadvantage in pursuing innovation activities (Brush et al., 2018).
