Using a comparison with Western orchestral conventions, he unpacks the roles in the interactive network in Javanese Gamelan. The assignment and division of leadership roles, the explicitness, recognition, and positioning of the leaders, the spontaneity and rehearsal of musical ideas, and the various domains of control over blend, balance, rhythmic coordination, and tempo. 5 He presents a great many existing social science theories for looking at creativity in ensembles, but does not appear to advance a particular approach of his own. His book is so far reaching, so aggressively interdisciplinary, that it almost loses some of its practical value for research. Also, his focus on judging the quality of a creative act detracts from his more scientific goal of theorizing on process and interaction.
