简介
In this chapter, the authors examine the fundamental question of whether objects that share a name are all similar to one another. They argue that name categories are distinct from similarity-based categories in that only name categories necessarily serve a communicative function; only name categories require explicit boundaries. They describe a number of ways in which they have explored the relation between these two kinds of categorization, based upon comparisons of linguistic category boundaries and perceived similarity for speakers of Chinese, Spanish, and English. They conclude from the outcome of these experiments, and subsequent computational modelling of the results, that naming cannot be reduced to any small set of features.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
