Artificial intelligence (AI) is the most recent development in a long series of disruptive
technological innovations in radiology. Medical imaging began in the late 1800s after the
discovery of the X-ray, but exploded in the late 1900s with the availability of computers to
create, analyze, and store digital images. Future speculation about radiology includes
widespread AI involvement; however, thus far, translation of AI to clinical radiology has been
limited.
