A connected and autonomous future for transportation requires a significant leap in
innovation regarding data security. In highly-autonomous vehicles (SAE level 4 and 5), an
immense amount of data is passed between applications that then must be able to sense
and react to the surrounding environment in real-time. This must be done safely and
securely. However, today's designs for autonomous vehicles are not yet good enough to
simultaneously satisfy all of these requirements.

Modern developments have increased the processing capacity of controllers along with the
gradual decrease in their price. This has enabled the construction and use of intelligent
control elements in embedded applications. These elements, such as smart sensors and
actuators, not only can pre-process sensorial data using sophisticated algorithms but also
enables the use of multiple communication protocols linking all the existing devices. The use
