In this chapter we adopt a design-science approach to demonstrate how evidence-based
management can extend experience-based management by judiciously gathering,
validating, selecting, and using knowledge. The creative processes in which valid
knowledge is used in designing and creating preferred futures are discussed, as well as the
nature of the design knowledge needed for this. This includes knowledge on possible
interventions with expected outcomes and on the mechanisms producing these outcomes.
