A high-salt diet increases renal endothelin (ET) production and thick ascending limb (THAL)
endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) expression. ET stimulates THAL eNOS expression
via ETB receptors. The tonicity of the renal medulla is highly variable, and hyperosmolality
