The 3-D effects of aero wings or marine rudders have already been studied by experimental
methods. However, it is difficult to obtain the detailed information of the flow fields such
pressure distribution, velocity distribution, vortex generation, etc. from the experiments.
Recently, Nguyen et. al. numerically studied on the several types of rudder sections as well
as the 3-D rudders with high lift force [1~ 4]. In the present study, the effects of 3-D flow on

The 3-D effects of aero wings or marine rudders have already been studied by experimental methods. However, it is difficult to obtain the detailed information of the flow fields such pressure distribution, velocity distribution, vortex generation, etc. from the experiments. Recently, Nguyen et. al. numerically studied on the several types of rudder sections as well as the 3-D rudders with high lift force [1~ 4].
In the present study, the effects of 3-D flow on marine rudders are numerically investigated by using a CFD commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT. The 2-D lift and drag force coefficients are computed and compared with 3-D coefficients at the same conditions. Moreover, the end plates are fixed at the top and bottom of the rudder to reduce the 3-D effects. The shape of the end plates have also been changed to optimize the hydrodynamic forces of the rudder.
