Abstract
The incidence and severity of pests and diseases that affect turfgrass frequently change in response to environmental conditions and the currently preferred management practices. The climate is becoming warmer in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which may lead to a change in the occurrence and spread of major turfgrass pests and diseases over time. Therefore, a questionnaire survey completed by 190 golf courses in 2001 assessed the incidence and severity of pests and diseases on putting greens in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris and Apporrectodea [Aporrectodea] spp.) and leatherjackets (Tipula spp.) were reported as the most widespread pests, both affecting 81% of greens. Microdochium patch (Microdochium nivale [Monographella nivalis]) was reported as the most common disease with 98% of greens affected as reported in the survey.
