Abstract
In the 21st Century, entrepreneurial skills have become of paramount importance for graduates, even those for the graduates in the accounting field. Our research explores the students’ perception of entrepreneurial skills as a predictor for innovation. Based on the accounting students’ characteristics, as a predictor for innovation, we analyse relationship between the University curriculum and accounting students’ entrepreneurial skills. To illustrate the mechanism through which entrepreneurial skills can be developed from the labour market perspective, we focus on quantitative research methods. Our findings shed light on the impact on both the development of entrepreneurial skills of the accounting students as a predictor for innovation and on the improvement of the accounting curriculum. There is a strong relationship between the entrepreneurial skills of the accounting students and the University curriculum. We draw the conclusion that the entrepreneurial skills of the accounting students are highly dependent on the University curriculum and are further developed by the opportunities offered by the labour market. The results show that there is a direct connection between the personal skills of the accounting students and the curriculum promoted by the University in the accounting area of interest. We prove that there is a lower correlation between the positive attitude values of the accounting students, first with regard to the meaning of the concept of innovation, followed by the relationship between the University curriculum and the motivation of the accounting students to develop their entrepreneurial skills. Thus, the accounting students show entrepreneurial intentions, but they are neither inclined to collaborate in order to apply these intentions nor to act strategically in order to develop their strategic thinking. The research contributes to the existing body of literature on the topic of entrepreneurial skills, which are mandatory for the successful development of the career of accounting graduates. The future research will be directed to bridge the gap between key stakeholders (accounting students and University, on the one hand, and entrepreneurs and companies, on the other hand) in the entrepreneurial process.
