This chapter is based on an action research project in multigrade schools in a rural
Education Zone in Sri Lanka from April 2000 to February 2002 (Vithanapathirana, 2005). It
presents the major findings of an intervention to improve multigrade teaching. The
intervention is set within the context of the Sri Lankan education system and the place of
multigrade teaching within it.
