The inhibitory activity of algal extracts (derived from Dunaliella salina, Chlorella ellipsoidea,
Scenedesmus acutus, S. dimorphus, as well as mutant strains of the 3 latter algae) against
lipid peroxidation was studied in a rat liver microsome model. All algal extracts (particularly
those derived from D. salina and S. dimorphus mutant strain) showed significant antioxidant
activity, which increased with increasing concentration. The antioxidant activity of these algal
extracts may be due to the presence of tocopherols, ascorbic acid, and carotenoids.
