Abstract
During machine milking of 46 local Stara Zagora ewes of the same age, lambing date (±10 days), number of lambs and type of udder, the animals were given scores (2 for positive and 1 for negative reaction) over a 6-day period for the following behavioural reactions during machine milking in a 2/24 parlour: (i) taking position in milking parlour; (ii) feed reaction; (iii) activity towards neighbours; (iv) feed reaction towards forage offered by hand; (v) reaction towards positioning of teatcups; and (vi) persistency of taking place in milking parlour. On the basis of individual total scores, 21.7, 43.5 and 34.8% of ewes were classified as strong, intermediate and weak type respectively (score >65, 55-65 and\less than 55). A significant difference between strong and weak types was observed for all 6 reactions. Classification of behavioural reactions in their order of importance for distinguishing between strong, intermediate and weak type ewes was (iv) > (iii) > (v) > (ii) > (i) > (vi).
