Abstract
Accurate segregation of duplicated chromosomes is essential for normal development of organisms. The kinetochore (KT), a multi-subunit protein complex assembled at centromeres, mediates the movement of chromosomes during cell division (Hamilton G. et al 2019). The transport of chromosomes is powered by stable connections between the KT and microtubules (MT) emanating from opposite poles of a dividing cell. Errors in KT-MT attachments can lead to chromosome missegregation or loss, giving rise to aneuploidy, a karyotypic state of having too many or too few chromosomes. The significance of accurate chromosome segregation is highlighted by the fact that aneuploidy is known to cause miscarriages, drug resistance, and contributes to the development of cancer (Li R et al. 2005).
