Intermittent claudication (IC) is the major symptom of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and
is also an important marker of systemic atherosclerotic disease. PAD affects 3% to 10% of
the general population, increasing to 20% in individuals over 70 years of age. 1-3 It is
associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, 4-8 with a risk for death
that is 3-6 times higher compared to the general population.
