Abstract
Attribution theory has shown that the kind of explanation that people give about social reality modifies their affective and behavioral responses. Thus, when a person is considered to be responsible for finding himself in an unfavourable situation, the affective reactions are more negative, and the predisposition to help, as much as social acceptance, are lower than when the explanation forgives the person. This investigation's aim is to analyze the relation between causal attributions about poverty, and prejudice against immigrants. 821 participants answered the Hine and Montiel's (1999) attributional scale and a Bogardus' Social Distance scale. Results support the elation between the kind of attribution and prejudice towards immigrants. Concretely, when participants choose personal causes as those responsible for poverty in the third word, less favorable are attitudes towards Moroccans, South Americans and Blacks, and fewer accept any close behavior towards them, than when external causes are chosen.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
