Abstract
Consumers want to be assured that the packaging is fulfilling its function of protecting the integrity, freshness, safety and quality of foods. To provide this assurance and help improve the performance of the packaging system, innovative active and intelligent packaging concepts are being developed and applied. Active and intelligent packing are such packaging technologies which refer to the incorporation of additives into the package with the aim of maintaining or extending the product quality and shelf life. Active packaging systems are categorised as-active compounds that are stuffed into sachets or pads or added directly into the packaging material. Unlike traditional packaging, which must be totally inert, active packaging is designed to interact with the contents and the surrounding environment which include oxygen scavengers, carbon dioxide absorbers and emitters, ethylene scavengers, moisture absorber, flavour or odour absorbers/releasers, antimicrobial and antioxidant packaging technologies. The intelligent packaging systems are those that monitor the condition of packaged food to give information regarding the quality and safety of the package to the producer, retailer and consumer during transportation and storage.
