Consumers want to be assured that the packaging is fulfilling its function of protecting the integrity, freshness, safety and quality of foods. To provide this assurance and help improve the performance of the packaging system, innovative active and intelligent packaging concepts are being developed and applied. Active and intelligent packing are such packaging technologies which refer to the incorporation of additives into the package with the aim of maintaining or extending the product quality and shelf life. Active packaging systems are categorised as-active compounds that are stuffed into sachets or pads or added directly into the packaging material.
