The genus Vigna Savi includes 7 subgenera of which three subgenera, Ceratotropis, Plectotropis and Vigna include cultigens. Subgenus Plectotropis includes the cultigen V. vexillata, the Zombi bean of East Africa. Subgenus Vigna includes two cultigens cowpea (V. unguiculata) and bambara groundnut (V. subterranea), the centers of diversity of both of these cultigens are in Africa (Ng and Monti (1990)).
