After a general consideration of the problems arising from a rise in groundwater, the main
physiographic, climatic and hydrological features and the main soil groups in Haryana State
are briefly described. The results of field experiments conducted at a number of sites over
the past 4-5 years are then reported. These are grouped under (1) drainage investigations in
the pilot project areas,(2) drainage system design and installation, and (3) performance of
