Effect of borax on serum lipid profile in dogs.

The effects of non-toxic oral doses of borax (4 grams) given with food daily for 30 days on
lipid serum profile in 10 dogs were determined. Serum glucose, insulin and apolipoprotein-B
levels decreased from week 1, very low density protein and trigliceride from week 2, and
apolipoprotein A concentrations at weeks 2 and 4. High density lipoprotein concentrations
increased from week 3. The results suggest that ingestion of non-toxic doses of borax
reduced lipidemia and thus may affect lipid and carbohydrate metabolism in dogs.
