Abstract
Aluminium based metal matrix composite constitute an important class of design and weight efficient structural materials that are encouraging every sphere of engineering application and mainly in aerospace application. Hybrid metal matrix composites consist of at least three constituents-a metal or an alloy matrix and two reinforcements in various forms, bonded together at the atomic level in the composite. The objective of the project deals with the evaluation of mechanical properties of hybrid aluminium MMCs. Here 6082 aluminium alloy is chosen as the base metal and SiC and Boron glass powder as the reinforcements. Preferred fabrication method is stir casting route. Al 6082 is reinforced with SiC and Boron glass powder composites with various wt.% combinations. The mechanical properties such as tensile, hardness and corrosion tests were evaluated. The mechanical properties were improved with the increase in weight percentage of SiC particulates with various weight percentage of Boron glass powder in the aluminum matrix.
