Abstract
Cane and sucrose yields of three promising clones, ECSP98-127, ECSP98-149, and ECSP98-169, from the 1998 selection series, were evaluated in semi-commercial trials against Ragnar, the most popular commercial cultivar, in Ecuador. Evaluation was based on cane yield (TCH), sugar recovery (KSTC), sugar yield (TSH), and fibre percentage. The clone ECSP98-169 produced the highest cane yield of 135 TCH that was statistically similar to Ragnar that gave 123.5 TCH. The clone ECSP98-149 had the best sugar content of 90.9 KSTC that was statistically superior to Ragnar with 85.4 KSTC. The clone ECSP98-169 gave the highest total sugar production of 11.1 TSH, compared with Ragnar (10.5 TSH) and clone ECSP98-149 (10.4 TSH). The results suggest that ECSP98-169 is the most promising clone that produced 0.6 tonnes more sugar than Ragnar. Similar results were obtained by this clone in Stage III and IV trials. All clones were statistically superior for fibre percentage compared to Ragnar (11.1%).
