Many countries use molecular tools and genomic selection in breeding programmes to
reach rapid rates of genetic gains, especially in dairy cattle in developed countries. This
paper provides a brief overview on genomic selection in dairy cattle. Some aspects related
the status of genomic selection application in livestock improvement are showed. Following
the examples provided by other countries, genomic selection should be considered for
animal breeding improvement strategies in Romania too.
