Abstract
Starting from the premise that gun control is about who can legitimately have a gun, and who cannot, this chapter provides three brief case studies (the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Africa) that show how in all these cases this determination has been along lines of class and ethnicity. It also shows a general trend, across the cases, away from the categorization based on such blunt descriptors toward a more putatively individuated approach to gun control that treats certain attributes and past actions as prohibitive for gun ownership regardless of more stable identities. In part, this shift is consistent with the overall neoliberal responsibilization in Western countries, but it also coexists with in some countries with the rise of a sovereign subject.
