Although ample research finds an association between emerging adults’ pornography consumption and a variety of negative effects (eg, risky sexual behavior, psychological distress; Braithwaite, Coulson, Keddington, & Fincham, 2015), fewer studies have examined the underlying mechanisms that facilitate this relationship. The current study fills this gap in the literature with an examination of the role of compulsive pornography consumption and heterosexual script endorsement on emerging adults’ sexual socialization. Using a survey of emerging adults (n= 458), our results demonstrate that compulsive pornography consumption is associated with endorsement of the heterosexual script, which in turn, is associated with hookup occurrence. No direct effect between compulsive pornography consumption and hookup occurrence was found, suggesting that gendered sexual scripts influence the relationship between compulsive pornography consumption on emerging adults’ sexual behaviors. Findings are discussed in light of the cognitive information-processing model and sexual script theory.
